The ALA has set a guideline for accredited programs to improve accessibility for their education, and in turn, many programs offer a full educational experience online. Limited opportunities exist for library science education in the state of New Mexico. No graduate programs are currently available at this time. New Mexico State University offers an associate degree that must be completed at the Dona Ana campus location.

New Mexico Library Science Degrees and Requirements

Graduate programs in library science and information studies feature an advanced skill set within education and technology. A teaching license and at least a Bachelor's degree is required for school librarian certification in New Mexico. The discipline or endorsement must feature library and/or media subject matter. A Content Knowledge Assessment must also be completed for a School Library Media Specialist with a passing score of 151 or higher.

New Mexico Library Association

The New Mexico Library Association (NMLA) has an emphasis to promote and enhance library workers and services across the state. In doing so, this will improve communities with additional resources for education and professional work. The NMLA was established in 1924 and is headquartered in Albuquerque.

Opportunities from the NMLA include grants and scholarships given to promising students in higher education. An annual conference brings together professionals for networking and working on library problems in a convenient setting. Workshops and continuing education are also available to improve established careers.

Salary Estimates in New Mexico

The state of New Mexico sees an annual mean wage of $52,500 annually according to the latest BLS estimates. Averages are on par or higher than many neighboring states, but lower than Colorado and Texas. The highest averages are found in the Santa Fe and Las Cruces metropolitan areas, which are above the $56,000 mark.
